Pinning it Down

Today I briefly helped burn some wood on the common after the morning feed around, to clear the old dead branches before they become embedded in new vegetation. Afterward, I helped Tony record the surveyed species on Excel from our outing to the chalk bank yesterday; many species of plant and a good selection of insects, including the Bee Fly. Tony then showed me how to pin out or set beetles, wasps and flies. Here is a photo of my first attempt; a St Marks fly. I look forward to learning how to pin butterflies and moths!
