Reporting for Duty!
Today was my first day working at the farm. I woke up early and had some breakfast before heading out of the caravan to watch the Red Kites in action, literally overhead. I even witnessed a mid-air fight between two of them! I then went to the yard and was introduced to Will, the other volunteer I will be working alongside, before going out to feed the ewes and pigs. I also watched a demonstration of how to 'elastrate' lambs which involves securing a band around the tail (or testicles) to remove it/them, preventing fly strike (or sneaky matings!). Will and I then gave the sheep on the common some apple branches, using the mule which I then learnt to drive! We stopped off at the local farm suppliers to get kitted out and I learnt some farming terminology from all the crazy products. All in all an amazing day, filled with new experiences and knowledge. I will sleep well tonight in my eerily (and brilliantly) quiet caravan!
